A Brief Introduction To Fiber Optics Technology

Understanding how fiberglass is made and how it works is a fascinating work of art combined with science.Optical fibers are made of a material that allows light to pass through and are placed in a tube. It consists of a bundle of very thin glass or plastic fibers that are wrapped together. One end is attached to the light source and the other end is the camera lens used to direct the light and image around bends and corners. Optical fibers have a highly transparent glass or plastic core surrounded by an envelope called a "cladding." Light is excited by a light source at one end of the optical fiber, and the cladding holds everything inside as the light travels through the tube. Then there's multimode, which has a much larger core, accepts light from different angles, and can use more types of light sources. Multimode fiber also uses inexpensive connectors, but cannot be used for long distances like singlemode fiber.

The use of fiber optics in these systems takes advantage of greater information carrying capacity while not suffering from electrical interference and requiring fewer amplifiers than copper cable systems.
