Cisco CCNA Should Take The One-Exam or Two-Exam Approach

Bandung, Telkom University - One of the most frequently asked questions by CCNA candidates is whether they need to take the "one big exam" or two separate exams required by Cisco to get the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) exam. .

The problem arises because there are currently two separate paths to CCNA certification. Candidates can take one exam (640-811) or two exams (640-821 and 640-811).

What is the difference? The two exam approaches involve exams on different topics and therefore different preparation techniques. 640-821 is the introductory exam for Cisco Networking Technologies. This course introduces candidates to Frame Relay, PPP, and other his WAN technologies, but does not go into detail. The introductory course focuses on knowing how Ethernet works, how different types of cables are used for different purposes, and which cable to use in a given situation. Candidates should also expect some binary questions, but some fairly simple conversions are involved.

The 640-811 exam, Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices, explores WAN technologies in more detail. Routing and switching operations are covered, and candidates are also expected to answer tough questions about binary math and subnetting. Candidates may also be required to demonstrate the ability to configure a router or switch via a simulator. The ICND exam is more in-depth and is generally considered a more difficult exam.

The approach I recommend for her CCNA candidates depends on their background. If the candidate is relatively new to networking or has never taken a certification exam, we recommend a two-exam approach. This allows candidates to focus exclusively on introductory topics and gain a strong sense of confidence after passing the introductory exam. This confidence translates into her ICND exam.

One testing approach is recommended for those with networking experience and familiarity with Ethernet behavior and cable types. This allows candidates to focus on the more advanced topics found in individual exams and spend little time reviewing knowledge at the introductory level.

Whatever approach she chooses will not change her path to true CCNA success.Get some real hands-on experience, either by renting rack time online or by putting together your own home lab.  Understand what’s going on “beneath the command”; don’t use router commands when you don’t understand what they’re doing.  Add to that a true mastery on binary math, and you’re on your way to having the magic letters “CCNA” behind your name!
