When I was asked what I would do if I had 20 extra hours a week while studying, the first thing I said was that I would never study. If I had the time, I would have actually written down a long list of hobbies and activities I wanted to do. When a colleague asked me what a company owner or manager would do if given her 20 extra hours a week, I was very intrigued by the answer. What activities do the sign shop owners do in their free time? Did you have any activities or hobbies in common in the sign and graphics industry? Or will you hear several different answers?
Results
The results were unexpected to say the least. On my fourth call, I started hearing that there was a general trend emerging among autograph shop owners: no one was used to having free time, or so. In fact, AWC Signs owner Marion Ward told me that in 20 years she hadn't worked 20 hours of overtime. "I don't know what to do," he said of his break from the business. Marion explained that he's been in the industry for quite some time and plans to retire soon. The idea of spending extra time was completely alien to him.Does Marion represent all of the autograph shop owners? Don't even have time to think? Or don't shopkeepers know how easy it is to save time these days?
The next person I spoke to was also surprised by the question. "He never thought about it," Randy of Bama Signs told me. Never thought of saving time. I asked, "Can you think about it and let me know what you would do?" I will spend time on that,” he said. Do on the side to earn a little extra money. It got interesting. There are already two people who never even thought of saving a few extra hours or hours. Two people who are surprised by the question alone.
Increased Productivity As a freshman on the
Gen-Xer, I've always looked for ways to make things easier. Isn't that what we do in college? Looking for ways to save time and still get the same or better results? My goal before was to: It was about finding a way to work less and get paid more (hopefully your boss doesn't read this). Most managers and economists refer to this as "productivity gains." Well, in this age of so advanced technology, there is always a way to work less and get more rewards, thereby increasing productivity. In fact, I now work for a company that helps companies do just that.
