Tips for Shooting Great Digital Photos

Having trouble taking good digital photos? You may have been taking digital photos for a while, but you've never taken the pretty pictures you really wanted. You may have somehow ruined the photos you took at an important event like your daughter's birthday or a trip to Paris.

How do you start taking good photos? Here's the first thing to remember:

It's the photographer who takes great photos, not the photographer. Think about it. That's right. Some people take great photos with basic point-and-shoot cameras, while others take lousy photos with the most expensive SLRs.

Don't worry! Read these tips for taking digital photos and apply them next time. You'll be taking professional-looking photos in no time!

1 Do You Know Your Camera

Does this sound familiar? You buy the latest digital camera, go home, rip the box off, and start tinkering with the device. Flip through hundreds of pages of camera manuals and never look back. Not a good idea! When buying a digital camera, you should understand its strengths and weaknesses. Learn how to control exposure, use different camera modes, and use flash. The knowledge you've gained about your camera is invaluable when you're on the go and taking special photos.

2. Learn how to control the flash

One of the most important things you need to know about digital photography is how to control the flash. Personally, I hate relying on the automatic flash that comes with digital cameras. Flash should be turned off or on depending on the situation.

For example, when shooting outdoors, it may be helpful to turn on the flash to illuminate your subject, especially if you are in the shade. On the other hand, you can also turn off the flash when shooting indoors. Using the flash indoors can result in unnatural skin tones and glare in your photos.

3. Playing with Macro Mode

Most digital cameras today have a macro mode. This setting is ideal for close-ups of subjects such as flowers and insects. Represented by a flower icon on the Canon PowerShot S500. Select your subject, activate macro mode, and get as close as your camera will allow. Make sure the camera is in focus before pressing the shutter button all the way down.

4 Keep your camera level

A basic rule of photography is to keep your camera level. Most digital cameras have an LCD, which you can use to position your shots correctly. The next time you take a photo, try looking for the horizon and using it as a guide. A good example is using the horizon line when shooting the sunset.

5 We recommend this tip for all budding photographers using the

tripod. A camera tripod is an essential tool in your photography arsenal. When do you need a tripod? This is useful when shooting in dark places or when you want to capture fast-moving subjects. For example, I like to use a tripod when shooting a night city. Always look for a tripod that you can easily carry around. For personal use, you don't need a big one. Just something simple and compact that can be easily packed.

6. Playing around with ISO settings

I find the ISO settings of digital cameras very useful. The ISO setting basically controls the camera

7. Have Enough Memory Capacity

Just like you must have enough rolls of film when using traditional cameras, make sure you always have enough memory capacity in your digital camera. It's terrible to be on a holiday taking great photos and suddenly realizing you've no memory space left. Here are some general guidelines for digital camera storage.

2 megapixel cameras - get at least a 64MB card

3 megapixel camera - get at least a 128MB card

4 megapixel camera - get at least a 256MB card

5 megapixel camera and above - get at least a 512MB or 1GB card
